Growing Vegetables in Containers

VEGETABLE PLANTS IN POTS

Almost every vegetable that is grown in the garden can be grown in a container of some sort. On this page we will provide you with a list of those varities that tend to do well under these conditions. While growing any vegetable in a container, remember all plants need at least 8 to 10 hours of sunlight to perform well.

Beans, Bush & Pole 5 gal. 1-2 50-60 Several plantings, two-three week intervals. Mix fertilizer in soil (3-5 tablespoons of 10-10-10) before planting seeds.
Beets 2 gal. 3 50-60 Thin beets when 4 to 6 inches tall
Broccoli 5 gal. 12-18 70-110 Heavy feeder, requires fertile soil. Three plants per pot.
Brussels Sprouts 5 gal. 12-18 120 Heavy feeder, requires fertile soil. Three plants per pot.
Cabbage 5 gal. 12-18 70-120 Heavy feeder, requires fertile soil. Two to three plants per pot.
Carrot 2 gal. 2-3 70-80 Several planting can be made about 3-4 weeks apart.

Celery 1 gal 4-8 120-160 Two plants per pot. Use newspaper to blanch stems
Chard, Swiss 1-5 gal. 4-6 55-60 Harvest leaves, thin for early greens
Chives 1/2 gal. 2-3 120-130 Grow like onions. Also propagate by division of clumps.
Collards 5 gal. 12-18 60-70 Grow like cabbage. Place plants close to the outer rim of pot. A heavy feeder. Pick outer leaves.
Corn, Sweet Flat 6-10 60-90 Corn is best grown in flat or large flower box with about eight inches of soil. Corn is a heavy feeder and needs to side dressed to yield.
Cress, Garden or upland N/A Spread seeds 30-50 Cress can be grown anywhere there is space. Best grown in a tilled area or in a flower bed in the spring and fall.

Squash, Summer 5 gal. 1 plant 50-60 Start plant in 6" or 1 gallon container and repot in 5 gallon after 20 days. Plant bush type.
Tomatoes 5 gal. 1 plant 60-100 Start plant in a 1 gallon pot and repot into a 5 gallon container after 30 days. Be sure to prune and stake plant.
Tomatoes, cherry 2 gal. 1 plant 55-95 Stake and prune depending on the variety.
Turnips 3 gal. 2-3 30-60 Harvest leaves and roots.
